Sound and Light Therapy

Vibrational Medicine - Scientific studies abound on the effect of sound on the human being. As western physical science explores the implications of quantum mechanics, researchers arrive at more and more evidence to support the efficacy of sound and vibratory healing techniques. There can be little doubt that we are energy beings - we vibrate within ourselves and in concert with the environment. Quantum physics demonstrates that everything is made up of vibratory fields. You have a physical body, emotions, mind, soul and spirit, each of which can be considered to be a vibratory field. Sound can cause different effects in each one of these fields. Consciously, sound invokes emotional responses. Subconsciously, it affects everything from the cells in our body to our soul.

The power of musical sounds and noises influence each of us differently. Different cells, bodily systems and organs have their own resonant frequencies at which they vibrate. Vibrational medicine can bring these systems into their optimal ranges of functioning. Both the electromagnetic and nervous systems are affected by vibration, sound, tone and frequency.

Sound is first received by the electromagnetic field and then by the nervous system, creating resonance within the body. The reception happens almost instantaneously. Sound is made of three fields: pulse, form and wave. We usually think of sound as wave. Wave and form are simultaneously created from pulse.

Human beings are a vibrating medium made up of pulse, form and wave. Some people tend to identify more with their form aspect, i.e., their physical body. However, when you realize that you are constantly emanating and receiving pulse, you can begin to reorient yourself towards vibration.

Frequency and Brain Waves

The more scientific music researches have found that by using certain exact frequencies, it is possible to make profound changes in brainwave patterns. The high-tech application of music and patterned frequencies is rooted in the scientific understanding that there is a direct relationshop between brain waves and states of consciousness. Khen Rinpoche (1992) reports that sound produces chemical and electrical transformations in the body that intensify the immune system. We now know that approximately one-third of the brain stem is given over to processing vibro-tactile vibration.

The famed musician Deuter said, "You will experience the best healing results when you open up to listen not just to your physical ears, but when you start to feel the vibration of the music with your whole body and spirit."

The Effects of Sound

The effects of sound are apparent in our every day lives. For example, we experience the energizing effect of sound and music every time we hear music with a heavy beat. Just think of the last time you heard a favorite dance hit and couldn't help but to start dancing.

The Bulgarian psychiatrist, Gorgi Lazanoff, was able to show an increased capacity for learning or "super learning" by playing Baroque music (1700's Bach, Vivaldi, Telemon, Handle) and by breathing in rhythm with the beat. It all goes to show that sound and music can have a profound effect on our health and well being, not only physically but also mentally and emotionally as well.

Pattern of Frequency

In the growing field of "energy medicine" it is well known that our universe is created through patterns of frequency. Science is now documenting what mystics of many traditions have known forever. Everything that exists in the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual realms does so on a vibratory basis. This is obvious if you consider that electrons are always moving and vibrating.

All matter, including herbs, pharmaceuticals and even food with its accompanying vitamins, minerals and other nutrients could be examined from a frequency perspective which may explain their biological effects. Bio-Resonance Therapy is researching these principles of energy medicine.

Questions & Answers

What are Mind Machines/ Light and Sound Machines?

An AVS (Audio Visual Stimulation) system, Light and Sound Relaxation system or a "Mind Machine" is a microprocessor controlled device designed to create relaxation or other mood changing effects through the use of sound and light stimulation. The user puts on headphones and stimulation glasses and sits back and enjoys the experience.

What are the features of a typical system?

A system consists of a light/sound synthesizer, stereo headphones and stimulation glasses with pulsating lights. Built-in light/sound sessions direct the stimulation synthesis, creating a carefully composed sequence of rhythmic light and sound patterns. The tone frequency, pitch and other parameters of the light and sound stimulation vary the effect, just as different styles of music do.

Why do they work?

Perhaps the better questions are: "Why do we enjoy music? Why is a flickering flame hypnotic?" Light/sound systems are the technological synthesis of centuries of exploration and a few years of neurological experiments. Light/sound systems blank our the complex visual and auditory stimulation the mind is constantly receiving and replaces it with very simple, rhythmic stimulation. The basic rhythms of the mental processes change in response. This is a safe and effective way to get your head in a different place. Meditators spend years learning how to gain voluntary control over these same rhythms. Think of it as the mental equivalent of stretching the muscles. The changed mental rhythms are temporary. When the session is over you will quickly get back into the mental state for everyday living, but spending time in the changed state can create a different outlook on the day and the effects are cumulative as you learn what it feels like. With practice, you can return to this state more easily.

How do I use a light and sound system?

To use a light/sound system, close your eyes, put the headphones and glasses on, listen to the pulsating sounds and watch the flickering lights through your eyelids. The sound pulsates either because it is turned on and off (like striking a note on the piano repeatedly) or because of beats or biaural beats. The flickering lights, seen through closed eyelids, create moving, colored, dynamic patterns (visuals) that will amaze you the first time you experience them. You can move your eyes and change the effect, and you can concentrate

on the patterns and change what they seems to be doing. Some people report seeing visions in the patterns as the imagination is inspired to work. The stimulation takes over your two main sensory inputs, and not surprisingly, has an effect on your mental state. Music has been doing this for centuries, without the assistance of coordinated flickering lights.

A beginning user should experience a session regularly (everyday or close to that) for the first few weeks. Don't overdo it - an hour a day is a lot. Intermittent use is not effective until you have learned how to respond to the stimulation. Light and sound systems are safe for most people but can cause problems for a small fraction of the population.

Why do session work differently for different people?

Light and sound sessions do not mechanically grab your brain and change its rhythms. They are subtle suggestions and different people will react in different ways. It is similar to music, a variety of people can have dramatically different reactions to the same piece of music. Manufacturers of juke boxes put in a lot of music hoping they end up with something for everyone. For similar reasons, we provide a lot of sessions - no one person will like of use them all, but we hope to have enough variety that there is something for everyone.

Also, there is a bit of a trick to letting yourself go. The effect is subtle - if you are thinking, "This machine is not going to take over my brain," then you will win (or lose, in the sense that you will not get the effect). At the other extreme, the approach of, "I don't think I'm feeling anything, I've got to find the effect - got to, got to..." works about as well as lying in bed thinking intensely, "Important meeting tomorrow, I've GOT to get to sleep." Some people are good at letting go, for others it's more difficult and takes practice. The trick in some sense is relaxing and going with the flow, but no one can tell you how to do it and it doesn't help to try hard.

Our recommendation is to try different sessions. Don't stick with one that doesn't seem to work. Once you are convinced that it doesn't work, it won't. Try some meditation sessions and work on "letting go."

Is Light and Sound Relaxation for me?

If you are searching for relaxation for the elusive moments of calmness and clarity and for a quick break in a hectic life - if you are interested in self improvement, then this is a fresh approach that is working for a lot of people and will most likely work for you too. Your mind and body work better when you are calm and not stressed. Relaxation is very good for you.
